   Proposal Description:
   The proposed research strives to examine three separate research aims. In all three studies, this author intends to begin with a sample of cognitively asymptomatic subjects derived from the Uniform Data Set, held by the National Alzheimer???s Coordinating Center. Various behavioral factors will be examined in relation to their impact on a subject???s progression to a diagnosis of Alzheimer???s disease, dementia. Other types of dementia will be excluded. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) will be examined as an intermediary diagnosis, as subjects may receive this diagnosis prior to a diagnosis of Alzheimer???s disease dementia, signaling an observable decline in cognition.     1. To describe the presence of sleep disturbance, depression, and APOE genotypes among cognitively asymptomatic subjects and these factors??? association with subsequent diagnosis of Alzheimer???s disease, dementia.     2. To examine the occurrence of behavioral symptoms included on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (i.e. delusions, hallucinations, agitation, depression, anxiety, elation/euphoria, apathy, disinhibition, sleep disturbance, irritability) among cognitively asymptomatic subjects and how these individual factors may increase or decrease the time to dementia diagnosis among APOE ??4 carriers.     3. To evaluate the association between the use of certain classes of psychiatric medication  (i.e. reported use of antidepressants, anxiolytics, sedatives, or hypnotics) to a diagnosis of Alzheimer???s disease dementia in a sample of cognitively asymptomatic subjects.    a. To characterize differences in progression to a diagnosis of Alzheimer???s disease dementia by APOE ??4 and the presence or absence of depression symptoms.
